“But I’m okay without a Facebook Page.”

“My family & friends are supporting me. What else do I need?”

“I don’t know how to use Instagram!”


I know social media can be overwhelming. You’ve probably wondered what to post, when to post it, and how often to post.

While all that’s important, you’re jumping over one crucial question:

Who’s your ideal target?

Just like writing, you need to have a target audience.

Your target audience shapes everything you do on social media. It helps you decide which platform to use & how to use it. It also helps you decide what kind of content you need to post.

As an aspiring children’s book author, your social media target audience should be the reader’s parents or caregivers.

Most authors think the young reader should be their ideal target. In some ways, this is true — you want your story to be relatable & compelling for the child reader. But at the end of the day, the child’s parent/caregiver decides which books to purchase and which to leave behind.

Since you want to avoid watching your book slowly collect dust on the bookstore shelves, it’s important to consider the reader’s parent(s)/caregiver(s) as you post on social media. 

You need to ask yourself questions such as...
  • Which social media platforms are young parents using?
  • What kinds of content are young parents interested in?
  • How can I relate to/connect with the parent of my target reader?
Once you answer these questions, you’ll be all set to start booting up your social media presence.
