Unblock your creative stream

 November 18, 2020

Let’s be honest…

Writer’s block is the worst! And, unfortunately, it’s something nearly every writer experiences from time to time.

You know where you want your writing to end up. You have a destination, but then all of a sudden, you’re stuck.

So, how do you become unstuck?

It’s a question I’ve asked myself a lot and over the years and I’ve begun to realize what works for me.

  • Look Back -- usually, if I have writer’s block, it means that something wasn’t quite right a few sentences back. Try moving back a few sentences to find what’s blocking your creativity. Some quick editing should unblock your creative stream in no time!

  • Take A Break -- sometimes writer’s block is your brain’s way of telling you it’s tired. Try taking a step away from your writing for a bit (maybe go for a walk, listen to some music, etc.) and then come back with a freshly re-charged mind.

  • Stick It Out -- if looking back and taking a break didn’t work, it’s time to just write. Force yourself to write, even if it’s no good, and get something on the page. You can always go back and edit later. You never know what you might come up with if you push yourself to stick it out.

Another big question people ask is, "how do I find the time to write?"

With four kids, I definitely get this. Some days the time just slips away.

To make sure I have the time to write, I schedule some “quiet time” for myself.

At first, I tried quiet time at home. Any parent knows that this does not work.

So, I eventually decided that my best move was to get out of the house and book a hotel room for one night so that I could have actual quiet time.

Just one night away gives me the time I need to get my work done and write!

Maybe for you, quiet time means finding a room in the house that’s far away from the chaos.

Or maybe it’s going to a local coffee shop for an afternoon.

Either way, make sure you set aside some quiet time for you and your writing.
