What Makes a Picture Book Publish-Ready? A Checklist for First-Time Authors

Publishing a children’s book is a huge deal! It’s one of the most rewarding experiences for a first-time author—the moment your hard work finally transforms into a beautiful book before your eyes.

But before holding that finished copy, you need to know if your book is truly ready for publication. If you’re unsure, you’re in the right place.

Before your story can fall into the hands (and hearts!) of young readers, there are foundational steps to ensure your book looks, feels, and reads like a professional picture book.

I’m here to walk you through the essential author’s checklist of what makes a picture book publish-ready. Let’s get you moving forward in your publishing journey with clarity and confidence!

✔️Finalizing Your Manuscript

Your manuscript is the heart of your book. A polished story lays the foundation for illustrations, printing, and design to shine. This is why the first step in the publishing checklist is thorough editing and revision—by yourself and a professional editor.

You might think: I’m a writer, I don’t need an editor. The truth is, every author benefits from fresh eyes. An editor catches what we miss, from unclear parts of the story to overlooked grammatical errors.

You don’t have to take every suggestion, but addressing points of confusion ensures your readers won’t stumble unexpectedly.

To help get you started, here are some questions about the story to ask yourself and your editor when you re-read your manuscript:

  • Is it child-centered?
  • Is it age-appropriate?
  • Is there a well-developed character?
  • Is the character actively and emotionally involved in solving the problem?
  • Is it clear why the outcome is important to the character?

In terms of copy editing, here are some practices to avoid:

  • Unnecessary adverbs and adjectives
  • Nondescript nouns
  • Useless qualifiers
  • Misplaced modifiers
  • Mixing first and third person

There is a lot to consider when finalizing your manuscript, so grab a cup of coffee, take your time, and romanticize the re-reading process—perfecting your manuscript before anything else is the most important step in the process. When you feel like you’ve done everything you can, you’ll know it’s time to move forward.

✔️Coordinating Illustrations

Once your text is finalized, it’s time to bring your words to life—visually! The illustrator creates the storyboard and covers along with the artwork for each page, before passing everything to the book designer. While it’s important to discuss your artistic vision, be sure to allow them creative freedom—illustrators often enhance your story in ways you may not have imagined.

Engaging visuals keep the reader interested in your story, so each page should uniquely balance text and illustrations. Spot art, half-page, single-page, or spreads each convey a different mood. Along with layout, you will work with your illustrator on character design, book style, covers, and page count.

✔️Formatting Files & Registering your ISBN

With text and illustrations complete, it’s time to bring everything together into a polished book layout using design and formatting. File formatting includes setting up the correct trim size, ensuring margins and bleeds are accurate, embedding fonts, and checking colour profiles so illustrations print as intended. I recommend hiring a book designer for this.

Once these components have been decided, you can start to arrange the pages. Besides the story pages, here is a breakdown of what a picture book consists of:

  • Front Cover: Book title, author’s name, illustrator’s name
  • Copyright Page: Copyright information and statement, ISBN, credits, publisher’s information
  • Dedication Page: A space to honor someone special, if desired.
  • Back Cover: Book description, author information, ISBN/barcode, publisher information, testimonials, price
  • Spine: Book title, author’s name, publishing company’s logo

When working on the copyright page, it’s important to understand why registering your ISBN matters. ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, a 13-digit number that allows bookstores, libraries, and online platforms to catalog, sell, and track your book.

Without an ISBN, your book cannot be sold through most retail channels. While your work is automatically protected by copyright once it’s written, official registration adds an extra layer of legal protection. It’s a safeguard against your work being copied without permission.

✔️Planning the Print

At last! The final stage before publishing. Here, all the creative work you’ve poured into your manuscript, illustrations, and design is translated into something tangible—a book children can hold in their hands.

You’ll need to decide whether to use a printing company or print-on-demand (POD). A printing company requires you to sell your books yourself, while POD allows you to print copies as they’re ordered. Each option has pros and cons, so choose the option that best aligns with your publishing goals, budget, and how you envision reaching your readers.

FAQs

How do I know when my manuscript is ready for the next step?

If you’ve polished your story, left room for illustrations, and your text reads smoothly aloud, it may be time to “let go” of the manuscript. Trust your story. At some point, moving forward with your book becomes more valuable than endless revisions.

Do I need an ISBN if I only plan to sell my book locally?

Yes. Even if your book is sold only at small events or local shops, an ISBN helps catalog your book professionally. It’s a critical step to ensure your book can be found and sold!

What’s a common mistake first-time authors make?

Many skip straight to illustrations before the manuscript is finalized. This often leads to costly changes and unnecessary delays. Always finish your manuscript first, then move on to illustrations.
