Amazon is the largest online bookstore in the world. It’s the spot where many readers go to find and purchase their books. Essentially, it is the place you want to make sure your children’s book can be found.

However, simply uploading your book and writing a quick description may not bring the level of engagement you’re hoping for.

If you want your picture book to reach the right readers, you’ll need to have the right strategy. Thankfully, marketing your book on Amazon doesn’t have to be complicated. You just need to know the right marketing tactics. 

This blog will walk you through six beginner-friendly tips to market your children’s book on Amazon so it can show up, stand out, and, most importantly, sell.

Six Ways to Market Your Children’s Book on Amazon

Ready to market your book on Amazon and get it into the hands of your ideal reader? Follow these tips: 

1. Choose a Launch Day

Build momentum for your book by choosing an official launch day. Once you’ve picked a date, spread the word. Tell everyone your book is coming and how to support you. 

One easy way to do this is to make what I like to call an Ambassador List. This is a group of family, friends, and cheerleaders who are committed to sharing your book on launch day. Be specific and tell them how. Ask them to share on social media, email their friends, tell their coworkers, and (of course), actually purchase your book the day of!

2. Share Your Amazon Link 

Once your book is live on Amazon, don’t be shy—share the link! Post it on your website, send it to friends and family, and share it on your social media pages. 

However, keep this in mind: people don’t just buy books—they buy stories. If you want to connect with your audience, you won’t do that by just texting a link and a “thank you!” Instead, pair your link with a personal message about why you wrote this book, what inspired you, and what you hope it brings to readers. 

3. Ask for Reviews

Having reviews on Amazon helps build your credibility. Consider this: when you’re shopping online and comparing two items, one with two reviews and one with 2,000, which one are you more likely to trust? The same idea applies to your Amazon book listing. Reviews help future readers know what to expect and whether your story is for them or not. 

Don’t be afraid to ask! Reach out to friends, family, and anyone you know who has read your book. Instead of just saying, “Can you write a review?”—let them know why their review matters to you.

4. Write a Great Description

Unlike being in a bookstore, your potential buyers won’t be able to pick up your book and flip through the pages before purchasing. This means that your description will need to do the heavy lifting and connect with them from behind the screen. 

When writing your description, consider these questions: 

  • What is your story about? 
  • What age is it for? 
  • What kind of themes does it explore? 
  • What will children (and parents) take away from it? 

5. Use Strong Keywords in Your Description

People are always searching for books, so help them find yours! Using strong keywords will help get yours discovered. This means it’s important to consider terms that your ideal reader (or their parent) might be typing in the search bar. These could be terms like “bedtime story,” “books about bullying,” “positive mindset for children,” or “first day of school.”  

Just remember: the more relevant the term, the more likely your book shows up, and the more likely they are going to click “Add to Cart.” 

6. Don’t Stop Marketing! 

Even once your launch day is over, your marketing journey isn’t finished! Keep finding creative ways to share your book so it is consistently landing in front of new readers. Any effort you put into it adds up over time. 

Continue to share about it on social media, start an email list, post behind-the-scenes content, respond to comments, and engage with your audience. It’s not just about selling your book—it’s about sharing a story with those who need it most.

However, everyone CAN market their children’s book—and it doesn’t have to feel like an entirely separate job. Often, the best marketing comes down to one very simple strategy: simply sharing your story with others.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when the marketing process starts to feel too overwhelming: 

Marketing isn’t one thing we do; it’s a lot of little steps.

Marketing isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s the small actions we take, like asking for reviews or posting the link on our Instagram story, to give our book visibility. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Keep a list of marketing ideas and work through them slowly.

Find what works and keep utilizing that; if it doesn't, it doesn’t. Not every marketing tactic works for every author. Exert your energy on what feels effective and true to you. 

Think of marketing as sharing.

When you reframe marketing as simply sharing your message with the right readers, it becomes a lot less intimidating. Instead of feeling like you’re just trying to sell your book like a door-to-door salesman, you’re offering something that can help children feel seen, supported, and inspired. This makes the process feel a lot less overwhelming—and a lot more fun!
