Ruth Don Shevlin
Ruth Don Shevlin has been writing stories since she was a little girl. She was a copywriter, proofreader and photographer for ad agencies in Chicago. In Florida, where she raised her daughters, she was a theater proofreader, taught preschool and volunteered with the Head Start Program. Art was a highlight early in Ruth’s life. From watching her father decorate cakes in their bakery to watching her mother prepare a meal, Ruth loved the idea of creating something. She painted backdrops and scenery for ballet productions and for the local theater. Art played an important role in her teaching, as lessons came together through daily art projects. Ruth is a member of the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators).
This book was originally written as a script for a preschool puppet show in 1985. While taking Early Education classes, Ruth was given an assignment to provide an in-class field trip and the story was born. This is Ruth’s second children’s book. Her first book, Rebecca’s Dream That Wasn’t, about overcoming stage fright, was published in April 2025. Now retired, Ruth lives just outside of Philadelphia near her family with her 36-year-old ornate box turtle, KC
