A Writing Group: Why You Need One & Where to Find It

You’ve heard me talk about accountability partners before, but have you ever thought about taking it to a bigger scale? A writing group might be the perfect fit for you.

Before I tell you why writing groups are game-changers, let me share this mind-blowing insight I discovered recently.

A short while ago I heard about this psychological study where researchers asked participants to stand at the bottom of a hill while wearing a weighted backpack.

The participants were asked to estimate how steep the hill was.

In this study, there were two conditions: the “alone” condition and the “friendship pair” condition. While participants in the “alone” condition made their estimates by themselves, those in the “friendship pair” condition made their estimates while a friend stood three feet away.

The researchers found that, on average, participants in the “friendship pair” condition estimated that the hill was less steep than those in the “alone” condition.

In other words, simply having a friend nearby made the hill in front of them seem less intimidating and more conquerable.

Why does this matter? It matters because this makes it clear that, if you have a big goal in front of you, a supportive community makes all the difference.

Why You Need a Writing Group

Let’s be honest. Writing your own book can be a tall order if you’re doing it alone. But, with a writing group to back you up, you’ll find that writing your own book becomes a lot more achievable.

You don’t have to bear the weight on your own. You don’t have to sit in front of a computer screen with your head in your hands thinking, Am I really cut out for this?

There’s a community ready to help you reach your goals, navigate your biggest questions, and celebrate your success.

With friends by your side and a support system in place, you CAN do anything.

Where to Find It

My favourite place to find any group, especially writing groups, is through Facebook. No matter the niche, odds are there’s a Facebook group out there for you.

And because I realize how crucial a supportive community is in a writer’s life, I’ve recently started a FREE Facebook Group for children’s book writers called the Children's Book Writers Community.

Who can help you get started, navigate your biggest questions, and celebrate your success?

All you have to do is CLICK HERE, request to join, and await your acceptance into the private writing group.

Then you’ll be on your way to engaging with a supportive community that will help you reach your goals.
