Ruth Don Shevlin
Ruth Don Shevlin has been writing stories since she was a little girl. She was a copywriter, proofreader and photographer for ad agencies in Chicago. In Florida, where she raised her daughters, she was a theater proofreader, taught preschool and volunteered with the Head Start Program. Art was a highlight early in Ruth’s life. From watching her father decorate cakes in their bakery to watching her mother prepare a meal, Ruth loved the idea of creating something. She painted backdrops and scenery for ballet productions and for the local theatre. Art played an important role in her teaching, as lessons came together through daily art projects.
Rebecca’s Dream That Wasn’t was actually written in 1978 as a small booklet, then made into a play by a local elementary school. A friend, who is a professional dancer with her own studio, still has her original copy and reads it to her younger dancers. Now retired, Ruth lives just outside of Philadelphia near her family with her 35-year-old ornate box turtle, KC.
“Rebecca’s story is my story. Mrs. Garrett was my teacher. Stage fright is very common for performers of any kind. I hope Rebecca and I can help little dancers—and performers of all kinds—overcome their fears and just enjoy doing what they love.”
